THE WILD DUCK AT EWEN

The Wild Duck Inn is a pub located in the village of Ewen, which is reputed to have 16th century origins. The building is listed Grade II and it lies within the Ewen Conservation Area.

The central oldest element of the building has a simple, quite compact form, and rises to two-and-a-half to three storeys. It is constructed in rubble stone with a stone slate roof. There are two small casement windows to the front entrance elevation, and three to the rear courtyard aspect. This central element sits above flanking ranges to the east and west, resulting in an unusual and distinctive composition. These ranges have been further enlarged in the 20th century, projecting to the north and south, with the long range to the west and front projecting range to the east constructed in reconstituted stonework. To the south eastern corner of the plot is an older attached barn, with a lean-to to its end. Another modern range has been added adjacent to this, and a gabled extension to the end, beyond the lean-to. The site has seen fairly extensive later 20th century development.

Proposed First Floor

From the Cotswold's district council Pre- app advice:

The position for this upward extension and increase in depth of the western range is generally one of support. This would be subject to the highest quality of traditional natural materials, including rubble stone and stone slate roofing, as well as carefully detailed architectural features – for example slim double glazed traditional casement windows and French doors with boarding or panels to the base and two or six panes above – and more convincing chimney proportions and placement flush to gables and roof breaks. In permitting this expansion it is considered necessary to achieve a significant enhancement and successful vernacular design, as appropriate to the sensitive setting.

Elevation approved

Other important element in the initial brief, was to increase the restaurant covers. Below you can see the proposed area. As a conservatory followed by a pergola.

Other works involve: Additional M&E and a new Bin Area.

I have fun in the search of different alternatives for the former Listed Building and the additional layout room on the west wing on which I work with Interior designers to conform an appropriated design.
