The Great Thythe barn

accommodation

Tetbury is defined as a Principal Settlement in the Cotswold District Council Local Plan.  The site lies outside the settlement boundary; the Conservation boundary runs along the edge of the car park, leaving the site for the new rooms outside of the Conservation Area.

The listed Great Tythe Barn is at the core of a leisure site that provides a party, conference and wedding venue which is local landmark and busy all year around.  In addition to the Barn there is guest accommodation in the farmhouse, and in various traditional farmyard buildings which have been converted into guest accommodation.  The site forms an important leisure facility, well known throughout the district.

Traditional farmyards in this region are typically organic and incremental in their growth and development.  The proposed buildings are in the form of animal shelters, cart sheds and loose boxes that can be seen throughout the Cotswolds.

The new buildings are parallel to the alignment of the Great Barn and, built in traditional materials, will form a cohesive group complementary to the existing pattern of development.  As is common in these type of buildings the range is punctuated by different roofing materials and different types of openings.

The walls are all to be built in square edge timber boarding; the joinery is to be painted softwood with oak posts on staddles supporting the roofs at the front of the building. The central bay, is to be clad in Bridgewater terracotta tiles while the buildings at each end are to have standing seam zinc roof system.

Elevation Proposed

This new accommodation wing is an important addition to the services provided to what is a successful and popular leisure and tourist facility.

The design and the siting of the proposed building fully respect the setting of the listed building, and forms a cohesive courtyard, enhancing the layout of the site.
